Writing music for amateur performers is one possible way to broaden the audience for contemporary music. Rehearsing and workshopping new pieces with amateurs educates those without conservatory experience about new music, and concerts put on by community groups often have free or low-cost admission which can be more inviting to concertgoers with low incomes. Let’s discuss the ways in which new music can be made accessible to amateur performers and diverse audiences and the possible benefits of doing so.
